The Ideal Life

I have started on my "big clean out", and while wading through many water damaged boxes in my parents garage, I came across one of my favorite organising books: It's all too much by Peter Walsh.

It's all too much is a brilliant book about de-cluttering your home and life. Of course, once I found it, I had to start reading it again. Peter Walsh is an organisation expert, and when he is with clients he starts off their journey by asking them what their ideal life is, in every aspect. Their home, health, relationships, experiences, activities and career. I started to think about my ideal life, and what I want from it.

My living situation is a lot more permanent than I had planned when I moved back home with my parents 8 months ago. In my ideal life Master A and I are living in our own place. A unit with a little back yard would be perfect. My friends are extremely important to me so I would love to focus on my friendships. Spending time with them and entertaining at home, being that having a small child means I can't always go out.

I want to have the time to do something for me; yoga, scrap booking and exercise are all things that I would love to make the time to do. Having an organised and clutter-free house would give me the space and time to do so. I would be working part time in a job that I enjoyed and studying.

I know that it seems I am trying to have it all, but this is my ideal life!

So now that I have my ideal life in mind (it is a little more complex in my head, I just skimmed over it for you) I am getting set on clearing out the junk. Anything that doesn't fit in with my "ideal life" doesn't stay.

It has given me the chance to sit and really think about what it is that I actually want in my life. Even the simple things like hobbies and interests. Not only in terms of big goals.

Have you ever thought about your ideal life?
What kinds of hobbies/interests would you love to make time to do?

Great post Chrissie - it is great to have a clear visual on what your ideal life is. definitely love "sit and really think about what it is that I actually want in my life."- so many people live on autopilot - you are being intentional and I am sure you will have that wonderful space with Master A and everything else you carefully add to your ideal life.
I am just starting to learn how to paint and draw - i have slowly been gathering materials, playing with colour and have signed up for 1 online course so far with my eyes on a 2nd - al about doodling, journaling, multi-media art!

Thanks Deb! I think the idea of looking at your ideal life before organising and decluttering is a great idea.
And looking at what interests you want to include in that forces you to look at what you can do to take time for yourself. After all that is what makes a happy mum, and I have ignored myself for far too long now, and it's taking its toll on me.

Sounds like a great book. It is so important to take time out to really think about what it is we really want from life.

It really is a great book, and I would love to go into a bit more depth about it in a post, however don't want it to sound like a sponsored post, as it isn't. Thanks for commenting!

I loved that book! You could replace 'Clutter' with 'Weight Loss' or 'Bad Relationships' or any other thing that is cluttering up your life. It was revolutionary to me at the time I read it, gave me great clarity - seems to have done the same for you!

It is always good to work out what you want for your life. Not good to just float through life and let things happen TO you...

I agree, we focus so much on whats best for our kids, but forget ourselves, and I know that when I'm unhappy and bored, I am a nightmare for my son! So it really is best for me to spend a little time on me, and I can only do so when I have the time and space, which the de-cluttering should really help. Thanks for commenting!

I'm in the middle of a big clean out now; in the house and in my mind.
I honestly believe immliving my ideal life; it's hard at times, and things aren't always as I would like them, but I'm where I should be, and I'm quite happy with that.

It is said that when we accumulate too much stuff, it becomes a burden, and prevents us from doing more with our lives. This is part of the premise of his book. However, listen to you heart as well. I recently decluttered, and not regret that I "gave away" valuable items because of the need to rid myself of them. Take a balanced view.
Wishing you well.

I haven't read the book but I really want to now. I love a good clean out and I am pretty ruthless with stuff anyway. I love reading, painting and running. Blogging has seem to takeover as a hobby. Rachel xx

That's great! I am certainly not doing the things that I love to do, and it is not giving me the time to myself. But if you are living your ideal life, doing the things you want to, then keep doing whatever you're doing! Thanks for commenting.

I agree that you certainly have to listen to your heart, these are your belongings. However when it is something that has been shoved in your garage for 5 years, no longer works, is stained and dirty and you're only holding onto it simply because it was a gift from someone, break free! It really is a great book. That's really good that you have your hobbies in mind, and blogging has certainly taken over alot of my time, and I would now consider it a hobby too! Thanks for commenting.

After reading through all the comments, I think I need to get this book :)

"Anything that doesn't fit in with my "ideal life" doesn't stay."

They are words to live by. I want to print that out and put it up somewhere to remind me often. I'm pretty ruthless when it comes to decluttering, but having said that, my house is still full of cr*p that needs to go.

I miss yoga :)

Definitely look into getting it. It has really helped me and I first read it years ago. It's only been since moving back with my parents that I have let it all go a bit. I don't really think its ever possible to totally get rid of all the crap, but as long as you can live your ideal life and you are happy, and you can find things, I don't see the problem with having a bit of crap! Thanks for commenting.
