Our First Aid Kit

After losing 2 of Master A's puffers, and constantly spending 5 minutes searching every time I needed something out of my first aid kit, I decided it needed a little bit of a revamp. We have quite a few little bottles of tablets for when I get back and neck pain, and have a massive stash of wound dressings from when Master A had surgery, so the system I had, was certainly not working anymore.

I used to have 2 small first aid tins. Although they looked great, they just weren't practical.

I tried to have 1 tin for medications, and 1 for bandages, band aids, etc. This didn't end up working. It didn't take long to fill both tins, and things were over flowing.

Sorry about the bad quality picture!
So off I went to Cheap as Chips. I had so much fun trawling through the storage isles, trying to find something perfect to do the job. Eventually this is what I came home with. All up it cost me $11.

After sorting through all the medication, throwing out old unfinished antibiotics and anything out of date, I starting sorting the medication and creams into the 2 baskets at the bottom of the box.

In the left side basket I have creams (antiseptic cream, deep heat, vicks, etc) and mine and Master A's spare puffers. In the right side I have all medications and pain killers. There is also a few boxes of tablets down the side.

I have sat the tray on top. It fits quite nicely, and there is still a little room underneath it to store anything else that needs to go in the first aid kit. Here I have bandages, band aids, tape, dressing kits and hyperfix that was left over from Master A's surgery wound, little sachets of sterile water, scissors and a heat pack.

I have taken all band aids out of the boxes and put them in a zip lock bag. There is also a zip lock bag with alcohol wipes, and one with gauze packs. This keeps everything 'like' together, and means that if we are running low on anything, I see quickly and can make sure it's added to the shopping list.

The tub sits nicely on top of my DVD shelf in my bedroom. The lid has a carry handle on it so that it can easily be carried to where ever it may be needed in the house.

Does your first aid kit need a bit of sprucing up?
What do you keep in your first aid kit?

We have quite an extensive first aid kit(s). My husband is quite over the top with it. We rarely use it, but I am glad it's there. Rachel x

Nice one. We don't really have much in the way of first aid, save for a very basic kit that lives in the car for when we go camping

It certainly can't help to have it there! That's good that your hubby is prepared! There's still a few things I want to buy for my kit.

That's good that you have one in the car, that's what I'm looking to do next. With a dare devil Munchkin like mine I'm not taking any chances! I see lots of cuts, grazes and broken bones in our future!

I love those tins - where were they from?

I do need to spruce up my kit. We have all our stuff in a small cuboard above our microwavec so most of the time things get chucked back in. It's a nightmare when we need to find panadol for the kidlets. You've inspired a clean out!

Our first aid kit definitely needs updating. Thanks for the prompt!

You are well and truly organised!
Our kit (or plural, kits) are set up pretty nicely. There's a box for the Panadol, band-aids etc. There's another one that's for emergencies.

My first aid box is an old shoe box, one with a flip-top. It works a treat! It houses bandaids, painkillers, medicine cups, vitamins, my son's spare ventilator and other pharmacy 'over the counter' solutions to minor ailments.

Haha Good on you! I originally wanted a pretty sewing box-type thing, but couldn't find anything and didn't really want pay too much. This was perfect! Try your cheap shops, they are perfect for storage!

They were from Spotlight. I used to work there so the amount of money I spent on storage and decor was ridiculous!

That was exactly why I did mine. I got so tired of losing all of Master A's medication that I just got too fed up in the end and went straight to the shops! Good luck!

It can be such an important thing to have. Only yesterday and today I have gotten things out countless times as I have woken up ill today, and needed medication and the sorts. It makes it so much easier if you can find everything!

It sounds like you are just as organised! With a little dare devil on my hands I have to be prepared for the worst. In the 2 hours between getting up this morning and being picked up to go to his dad's house Munchkin fell over and hit his head twice. I'm sure you know all bout that sort of thing with 2 little boys!

This is a very good idea. Ours is just thrown together on the top shelf of our pantry. Not very practical in an emergency. Organisation really is the key.

It's always good to be a little organised with this in case of an emergency. Or even just day to day situations, needing to find the kids panadol or your own cold and flu tablets. You are certainly right about organisation being the key.

Good for you on changing how you stored your first aid stuff and then making it work for you. I think the best First Aid kits are those we make especially for our needs. too often the commercial ones have items which are never used. We have had various storage systems over the years. Most important after keeping them out of little people's way, is to store away from light and heat. Oh yes, and to check expiry dates.

Thankyou! I agree with you about the commercial ones. And they are often way over-priced. Still a few things I want to buy for it but very happy with it. And definitely keep it out of little hands reach. Too much could go wrong!

Aahh that's what I like to hear! Good luck with sorting through your own, I think there's going to be a lot of organised first aid kits/cupboards over the coming weeks!

I've got a mini first aid kit in my bag which I take everywhere with me, but as far as my medicine cupboard goes it definitely needs sprucing up :)
